To upload your web page to your new web account, you need to obtain an FTP program/client. These can generally be obtained as a shareware or freeware product from web sites such as www.shareware.com or www.tucows.com, off CD's that come with computer/Internet magazines or click on the link below to download an old but reliable version of WS FTP.
Once you have downloaded WS FTP, install the program as per the instructions. During the set up, it will ask you questions regarding your use of the software. As a freeware product, sometimes conditions apply that the software will only be used by a non-commercial body, such as a student. Keeping this in mind, you should have no problem completing the final steps of the installation.
Once your software is installed, add a new profile or session. This can be called whatever you want, but probably best to include the account name and the location, for example 'My Company @ Adroit' should be fine.
Next add the host name/address, which is your web site address (for example - www.mydomain.com.au); the user ID. which is your account name; and finally your unique password, as supplied to you by Adroit. You can add a comment to this FTP account also. Once you have added these details, click 'apply' or 'save' to save this information.
Now you can click 'OK' to connect to the Adroit server and your account.
A screen should appear with two windows. The first window is your computer's hard disk and the second is your web account or Internet hard disk, on the Adroit server. Firstly you need to locate the files or web site that you want to upload to your web account on your computer. Once they have been located, select all the directories and files that you wish to upload by holding down the 'Ctrl' key and highlighting the files with your mouse.
Special Note: Please ensure that the welcome page you wish to load first is called 'index.html' or index.htm'. Also, if there is an option of file transfer type, please select 'Auto'.
Once these files are selected, open the 'web' directory on the server to open that folder. All your web pages should be contained in this directory.
Now simply click on the upload or the arrow pointing to the server directory button to upload your files. Once your computer has finished uploading the web site, close the session and open a web browser to check your new web page.
If you have a domain name which has been delegated to your web account, your site will simply be found at your domain, ie 'www.mydomain.com.au'. If you have a standard web account with no domain name, your site can be found at 'www.adroit.net/~myaccount/'. All you need to do is to replace 'myaccount' with the account named assigned to you.
Special Note
If you are uploading changes to your web site, and they don't appear to have changed when viewing them on a web browser, hold down 'Ctrl' and click 'Refresh' if you are using MS Internet Explorer to view the latest change. If you are using Netscape, hold down 'Shift' and click 'Reload' to refresh your cache. Alternatively you can also empty or delete all your temporary Internet files, as they not only take up space on your hard disk, but also make viewing an updated web page difficult.
If you get an error that says you 'do not have permission to connect to this account' or the FTP client will not allow you to upload any files, try using 'Passive Transfer' as this helps you get around any firewalls in your network.
