search engine submission

if you build it, they will come, right?

Wrong.

Approximately 80% of all web sites are found by using a search engine, so therefore it is important that your web site is included in as many of the relevant search engines as possible. As a rule of thumb, you should submit your web site to all the major search engines (approximately 10-15 in Australia and some of the major US players) plus any of the 1000's of other minor specialist search engines.

All search engines operate in a different way, some have automated robots that grab special information or tags contained within your web site, some sort by category, some sort by content, some sort by keywords, some sort by popularity, some only accept manual submissions, some manual submissions are reviewed by editors while some manual submissions inform search engines that a site exists and that it should have a look at it.

However, before submitting your web site to any search engine, it is a good idea to prepare a list of the following promotional information:

Title of your web site
No more than 10 words which best describes your web site. Do not repeat words and try to use unique and descriptive words.

Keywords
Prepare a list of 15-20 keywords that best represent your web site in order of priority. About 5-8 keywords should be singular words and the rest phrases or multiple words (ie web design, good web sites). All words should be in lower case and separated with a comma and a space after the comma.

This web site promotional information can be used in both your web site and when submitting your web site to the search engines. If you are unsure where to include your web site title and keywords in your web site, please talk to one of our staff for assistance. However if you have not completed any major web site changes, have pages with no or little content in them or feel that your web site is not optimised for search engines, it would be best to finish these first before submitting your site to any of the search engines in the links on the right.

  search engine tips
  • Get as many links to your site from other sites as possible
  • Don't repeat keywords too often throughout your site
  • Make sure all your images have ALT tags
  • Ensure your image and HTML file names are descriptive of the content contained within it
  • Don't use frames
  • Ensure your index.html file has good keywords and descriptive content contained within it.
  • Avoid using text in images as search engines won't pick this up.
  • Never submit your web site more than once to the same search engine within 6 months, as you may get black listed.
  • Schedule to check your web site listing every three to six months and see if you have moved position when you use the same keyword
