S/MIME is a specification for secure electronic mail. S/MIME stands for Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions and was designed to add security to e-mail messages in MIME format. The security services offered are authentication (using digital signatures) and privacy (using encryption). There is a growing demand for e-mail security. S/MIME melds proven cryptographic constructs with standard e-mail practices. More importantly, it was designed to be interoperable, so that any two packages that implement S/MIME can communicate securely. SMIME is the only official standard for encryption of e-mail as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
You can use a Thwate Personal Certificate to digitally sign and encrypt your e-mail communications. Thwate Personal Certificates are trusted out of the box by all major S/MIME-compliant secure mail clients, such as Microsoft Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator 4.x. S/MIME has been adopted by most messaging vendors as the leading e-mail and messaging security standard.
Once you have obtained your Personal Certificate and installed it in your e-mail browser, you can export a public key from your e-mail browser, which can be uploaded to web site applications that will be sending you encrypted e-mail's. Only you will be able to decrypt those e-mail's.
